Margin Gem Amish Wood Cookstove — Custom-Built in Ontario

The Margin Gem is a premium airtight wood cookstove, handcrafted by Amish artisans in Ontario, Canada. Built to order, it combines traditional cooktop and oven functionality with modern innovations such as the Air-Jet re-burn system. With multiple finishes and a wide range of factory-installed add-ons, the Gem can be tailored to suit the needs of modern homesteads, off-grid homes, and rural kitchens.

Please Note: These stoves are built to order so will ship approximately 4-6 weeks after the order is made. Shipping is from Canada so shipping times can vary.

Key Features

  • Heats up to 1,750 sq. ft. with clean-burning Air-Jet re-burn technology
  • Hand-built by Amish craftsmen in Ontario for unmatched durability and attention to detail
  • Airtight firebox accepts logs up to 17″ (front or top loading)
  • 26″ × 37″ cast-iron cooktop for large pots and multiple pans
  • Full-size oven: 20″ W × 20″ D × 10.75″ H
  • 7″ flue outlet, ULC-S627/UL-1482 certified
  • Includes ash scraper, poker, and lid lifter
  • Available in Black, White, or Almond with Nickel trim

Customizable Add-Ons

The Margin Gem can be customized with the following add-ons (selected through our options tool at checkout):

Reservoir (Color-Matched Option)

Side Reservoir (5 gal): Copper or finished steel, available in stove enamel colors/trim. Provides hot water for everyday use.

Other Reservoir & Hot Water Options

Rear-Mount Reservoir (20 gal): Large-capacity stainless steel tank mounted behind the stove for extended hot water use (not color-matched).

Reservoir Faucet: Adds a faucet for drawing hot water directly from the reservoir.

Firebox Water Jacket: Integrates with your water system to provide a continuous hot water supply.

Closet and Shelf Options:

Shelf: Nickel trimmed shelf for warming or storage.

Warming Closet: An enclosed cabinet mounted above the cooktop that uses rising heat to keep food warm until serving. (Note: you can choose either a Shelf or a Warming Closet, not both.)

Draft Airflow Control Options:

Thermostat Draft Control: Coil-spring thermostat that automatically regulates airflow for steady heat.

Circulating Fan: Electric fan option to move warm air into the room.

Heating/Fuel Options

The Margin Gem is primarily designed as a wood cookstove but can be factory-configured to burn coal with the appropriate firebox and grate options.

Jet Coal Fire Box: Factory coal firebox configuration that converts the stove for coal use.

ST Coal Fire Box: Alternate coal firebox design for burning coal.

Grate Lay-On Plate: A cast-iron plate designed to sit inside a coal firebox, allowing the stove to also burn wood. Customers who want the flexibility to burn both coal and wood can order the coal option along with this lay-on plate.

Cooking & Functional Accessories

Extra Oven Rack: Provides an additional oven rack to expand baking capacity.

Maple Leaf Trivets: Decorative nickel-plated cast-iron trivets with a Canadian maple leaf design.

Flue Options

Front Flue (Standard / ULC Certified)
The Margin Gem comes standard with a front flue configuration, which is required to maintain ULC-S627 / UL-1482 certification. This is the default configuration unless otherwise specified.

Rear Flue (Non-ULC Configuration – Optional)
A rear flue configuration is available upon request; however, this setup does not carry ULC certification. Customers selecting this option should confirm local code requirements before proceeding.

Hot Water Optional Upgrades

Jet Unit Water Jacket: Designed to integrate with the wood firebox setup, providing continuous hot water while burning wood.

The water jacket is an internal stainless-steel heating unit installed inside the firebox, replacing the firebrick on the left-hand side. Unlike the side reservoir, which is designed for smaller volumes of hot water, the water jacket is intended for heating larger quantities of water.

When installed, the water jacket is plumbed from the rear of the stove to an external water storage tank (minimum recommended capacity of 50 gallons). This allows the stove to heat water for broader household or off-grid use.

Margin installs the water jacket directly into the stove and pressure-tests it prior to installation. The plumbing to the external tank is completed by the customer or their installer. A basic plumbing diagram is provided to assist with setup.

Important note:
The stove must never be operated with an empty water jacket installed, as this will damage the unit. The water jacket must remain filled with water at all times during operation.

This option can be added at the time of order or at a later date, making it a flexible upgrade for customers who may wish to expand their hot water capability in the future.

Coal Unit Water Jacket: Designed to pair with a coal firebox setup, providing continuous hot water while burning coal.

When the stove is configured for coal burning, the water jacket functions in the same way, providing efficient heating for larger volumes of water via an external storage tank. The coal-compatible water jacket is designed to withstand the higher, more consistent heat output produced when burning coal.

As with the standard water jacket, it is installed by the manufacturer and tested prior to shipment. Plumbing to an external tank is completed by the customer or installer, and the water jacket must remain filled with water at all times during operation.

FAQs

How do I choose options?
You’ll select your base colour/trim as a product variant. Add-ons like reservoirs, shelves, and thermostat controls are chosen through the options tool before checkout.

What’s the benefit of the Air-Jet re-burn system?
It re-burns smoke and gases inside the stove before they exit the flue, producing more heat from less wood and reducing creosote.

Can I get hot water from this stove?
Yes — by adding a reservoir or water jacket option, you can produce hot water for cooking or household use.

How long does delivery take?
Since each Gem is custom-built, please allow 4–8 weeks for production plus freight time.

Can the Margin Gem burn both coal and wood?
Yes. With a coal firebox option and the grate lay-on plate, the stove can switch between coal and wood for flexible heating.

Does the stove require electricity to operate?
No. The Margin Gem is fully functional without electricity, making it ideal for off-grid living. Add-ons like the circulating fan do require power.

Liftgate Service, Curbside Delivery & What to Expect

We understand that freight shipping can be confusing — especially if you’ve never had a large item delivered this way. This page will walk you through exactly how it works, including what a liftgate is, what “curbside delivery” really means, and what to be prepared for when your order arrives.

Why Freight Is Used

Freight shipping is required for large or heavy products — usually those over 120 lbs or oversized dimensions. Unlike standard parcel shipping (UPS/FedEx), freight is handled by a trucking company using semi-trucks.

What is Curbside Delivery?

All of our freight shipments are curbside delivery by default, which means:

- A full-size semi-truck (typically 20 to 53 feet long) will arrive at your location.
- The truck will stop at the end of your driveway or nearest accessible point — not necessarily at your garage or door.
- The driver’s responsibility ends at the curb. It’s your responsibility to unload the item from the truck unless other arrangements are made.

Important: Some extremely large or heavy products are not eligible for residential delivery at all, even with liftgate service. In these cases, you will need to collect your order from the nearest freight terminal or depot. We will notify you if this applies to your order before it ships.

What Is a Liftgate?

A liftgate is a hydraulic platform on the back of a truck that can lower freight from the truck bed to the ground. Not all freight trucks are equipped with one, and it's not guaranteed unless you request it in advance.

If your delivery location does not have a forklift or loading dock, we strongly recommend ordering liftgate service.

- Liftgate fees typically range from $25 to $125, depending on the product or carrier.
- If the truck arrives without a liftgate and you’re unable to unload, you may be charged re-delivery and full liftgate fees.

What Drivers Are (and Aren’t) Required to Do

- Drivers are not required to assist with unloading
- Some drivers may help at their discretion, but this is not guaranteed
- If the truck can safely pull into your driveway and turn around, they may accommodate — but it’s entirely up to the driver
- If your road or driveway is inaccessible to large trucks, you’ll need to meet the driver at the nearest accessible location

Important Notes

- Do not accept or use liftgate service unless you’ve ordered and paid for it — even if the driver says it’s okay. Carriers may charge you $100+ for unauthorized use.
- In some areas, liftgate delivery may be required by the freight company for safety or liability reasons
- If you’re unsure whether you need a liftgate, assume yes unless you have a dock or forklift on-site

Delivery Scheduling

- The carrier will contact you by phone to arrange a delivery appointment
- Typically, you’ll receive a 1–2 day notice and a 3–4 hour delivery window

Before You Sign

Inspect your shipment thoroughly before signing the delivery receipt:

- If there is any damage, note it clearly on the paperwork
- Take photos immediately
- Contact us within 24 hours

Summary

- Freight deliveries are made via large trucks to curbside locations
- Liftgate service is not included unless requested
- Some oversized items are not available for residential delivery and must be picked up at a depot
- Always inspect and document before accepting delivery
