Oil Filtration Made Easy

Filtering the oil is a simple and quick process that helps extend the life of your pump and enhances the performance of your freeze dryer.

First Use:

  • Remove the packaging from the cartridge, grip the top of the cartridge, and insert it into the cartridge holder.

  • Press the cartridge firmly into place until it seals properly.

Optional: You can use the dial on the lid to set a reminder for the month you last filtered the oil.

Important Filter Information:

  • The filter is not dishwasher safe.

  • The filter should only be used with vacuum pump oil.

First Use:

  • Remove the packaging from the cartridge, grip the top of the cartridge, and insert it into the cartridge holder.

  • Press the cartridge firmly until it seals securely.

Optional: The dial on the lid can be adjusted to serve as a reminder of the month you last filtered your oil.

Oil Filtration Instructions:

  1. Open the oil reservoir drain valve and let the oil drain into the filter. To ensure complete drainage, slightly lift the rear of the vacuum pump.

  2. Wait for the oil to pass through the filtration system.

  3. During filtration, a small amount of water mixes with the oil. As the filtration process continues, the water will settle at the bottom of the container while the oil remains on top.

  4. Once the oil is separated, carefully pour off the oil and discard the water. Do not return the water to the vacuum pump as it could cause damage.

  5. Pour the filtered (or fresh) oil back into the vacuum pump.

How to Determine if Your Oil is Clean for Use:

  • The oil should be free of debris or particulates.

  • The oil should not appear milky or cloudy.

  • The oil should be clear (it may appear yellow or amber but should remain clear).

  • Your vacuum pump should be achieving a suitable pressure (mTorr) for freeze-drying.

How to Know When to Replace the Oil Filter:

  • If oil doesn’t drain properly through the filter (this can occur over time as debris accumulates).

  • If the oil continues to appear milky or filled with debris after filtering.

How to Replace the Oil Filter:

  • Replace the cartridge or order a new replacement set from Harvest Right.

  • Cartridges should generally be replaced after 15-20 uses, or sooner if the oil quality is poor.
